HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION
For the past thirty years, Miracle Temple Church has developed an intimate relationship with the Southwest Baltimore community through providing a number of community service activities. The Meals on Wheels ministry has fed hundreds in the community. The program attracts elders, mothers, and fathers who often take food home for their children. The church also has hosted monthly Kidz Nite Inn events for youth age 3-16 years old. The fellowship hall is often crowded with kids who play games, learn new skills and how to solve conflicts peacefully.
Miracle Temple Church has provided other outreach services include annual health fairs, community clean-ups, clothing give-a-ways, and smoking cessation and addiction classes. These classes are open free to the community and are taught by professional social workers, drug counselors and physicians. Outreach to the local nursing home, hospital visitations, and numerous other outreach ministries, facilitates community partnerships and natural collaborations that improve the lives of youth and families in the Southwest community.
Southwest Baltimore is a mostly African-American community of about 21,000. The median income is $19,000, with 58 percent of people living below the federal poverty level. About a third of residents own homes; nearly one-fifth of the neighborhood’s houses are vacant. Four-fifths of high school freshmen do not graduate. It has a high crime rate, drug addiction, and unemployment rates.
The Faith Center was created to respond to the growing needs of the Southwest Baltimore community. The targeted service area is the 21233 zip code that is bordered by Mulberry Street on the north, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Tracks on the south, Carey Street on the east, and the Gwynn Falls River on the west. There are historical areas that are notable to be mentioned; Franklin Square and Union Square Historic Districts, the Mill Hill Deck of Cards Historic District. the rowhouses that are built around them, and the B&O Railroad. There are three main commercial areas; West Baltimore Street, West Pratt Street, and Westside Shopping Center. Bon Secours Hospital, West Baltimore’s largest employer, provides quality jobs, health care, and affordable housing. Light manufacturing businesses in the community provide over 1,400 jobs.
Franklin Square, Union Square, Traci Atkins Park, and ABC Park are historic and beautiful small parks that provide beauty and recreation. There are six elementary schools; Bentalou, Lockerman Bundy, Franklin Square, Samuel F. B. Morse, Steuart Hill, and Frederick Other nearby assets include Carroll Park, the B&O Railroad, Hollins Market, Montgomery Park, Camden Crossing, and the Mount Clare Shopping Center.
